Climate change, sustainable development and women and children’s health topped discussions between Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Norway’s Prime Minister in New York today.

Mr. Ban and Jens Stoltenberg had an in-depth exchange of views on expectations for the United Nations Conference on Climate Change in Durban, South Africa later this month, and the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) in Brazil in June next year.

The two leaders also discussed Mr. Ban’s Sustainable Energy for All initiative through which the Secretary-General is promoting efforts to achieve universal access to modern energy services, accelerate the rate of improvement in energy efficiency and double the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix by 2030.

Their discussions also touched on the Every Woman Every Child initiative, a global effort to mobilize and intensify global action to improve the health of women and children across the world.

Separately, Mr. Ban also met with President Aníbal António Cavaco Silva of Portugal with whom he exchanged views on a number of issues, including the country’s presidency of the Security Council this month and the situations in Guinea-Bissau, Timor-Leste and Libya.
