On margins of General Assembly debate, Ban meets with world leaders

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today continued his meetings with world leaders on the sidelines of the General Assembly’s annual General Debate, discussing the Middle East peace process with Slovenian President Danilo Türk and the famine crisis in Somalia with Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki.

Mr. Ban’s talks with Mr. Türk also touched on the situation in Libya, next year’s United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) in Brazil, and the need to focus attention on health issues such as non-communicable diseases (NCDs) as part of the development agenda.

With Mr. Kibaki Mr. Ban also discussed Sudan and South Sudan, and reiterated UN readiness to continue supporting the Government in implementing a reform agenda and preparing for 2012 general elections.

In a later meeting with Mongolian President Elbegdorj Tsakhia, Mr. Ban voiced his appreciation for the East Asian country’s role in the areas of sustainable development, nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, and peacekeeping.
