Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has voiced his profound sadness after a ferry sank yesterday off the coast off Zanzibar, Tanzania, killing almost 200 people.

Media reports indicate that the ferry capsized between the Indian Ocean islands of Pemba and Unguja.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson today, Mr. Ban noted the loss of life and offered "his condolences to the Government and people of the United Republic of Tanzania and Zanzibar and the families of the victims. He also wishes a speedy recovery to the people who survived the accident."
