Ban re-appoints Edmond Mulet to senior UN peacekeeping post

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has re-appointed Edmond Mulet as Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, a position the Guatemalan national held from 2007 to 2010 before he was deployed to Haiti in the wake of last year’s devastating earthquake.

As the top United Nations envoy and head of the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), Mr. Mulet led the world body’s contribution to the country’s recovery, from the provision of humanitarian assistance to reconstruction to the recent holding of presidential elections.

The past year has been a challenging one for Haiti, which has faced the difficult task of rebuilding and coping with the aftermath of the 12 January 2010 quake in which 230,000 people died and countless more were injured; a deadly cholera outbreak; a close brush with Hurricane Tomas; and political instability and deadlock, and related electoral violence.

Mr. Mulet is no stranger to Haiti, having previously served there as the Special Representative of the Secretary-General from 2005 to 2007.

He has also held various positions in his country as diplomat and member of Congress, and as a journalist and legal counsellor.
