Iraq: UN envoy condemns deadly attack on pilgrims in Karbala

The United Nations envoy to Iraq today strongly condemned the deadly terrorist attack against Shi'ite pilgrims near the holy city of Karbala that killed dozens of people and wounded many others.

Ad Melkert, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, extended his sincere condolences to the bereaved families and sent his wishes for a full and speedy recovery for the wounded. Media reports said at least 50 people died in the bombings and over 100 were injured.

Mr. Melkert is “deeply concerned about the continuation of targeted attacks against specific groups in Iraq, the security forces, and government and political figures,” said a statement issued by the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), which he heads.

He is also “appalled by the hideous attacks against worshippers of various faiths in Iraq” and underlines that respect for Iraq’s diversity will strengthen the country’s efforts to establish a “democratic, pluralist and inclusive society,” the statement added.
