Security Council extends mandate of UN observer force in Golan Heights
The Security Council today extended the mandate of the United Nations force observing the ceasefire between Israel and Syria on the Golan Heights for a further six months, until 30 June 2011.
The Security Council today extended the mandate of the United Nations force observing the ceasefire between Israel and Syria on the Golan Heights for a further six months, until 30 June 2011.
The 15-member body took that action unanimously, acting on the recommendation of Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who proposed the extension in his latest report on the UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF).
The peacekeeping mission was established by the Council in May 1974 to supervise the disengagement accord between Syrian and Israeli forces after their 1973 war.
Mr. Ban noted in his report that the situation has remained “generally quiet” in the Israel-Syria sector in recent months.
“Nevertheless, the situation in the Middle East is tense and is likely to remain so, unless and until a comprehensive settlement covering all aspects of the Middle East problem can be reached. I hope that determined efforts will be made by all concerned to tackle the problem in all its aspects, with a view to arriving at a just and durable peace settlement,” he stated.
