General Assembly President confers with Security Council counterpart

General Assembly President Joseph Deiss today met with the President of the Security Council for this month, Uganda’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, to discuss a number of issues on the agenda both organs of the world body.

Ruhakana Rugunda briefed Mr. Deiss on the mission the Council undertook to Uganda and Sudan from 4 to 10 October.

He underlined the responsibility of the international community regarding the referendum on the self-determination of southern Sudan scheduled for 9 January next year, which will mark the culmination of the implementation of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement that ended civil war between the north and the south.

Both men also discussed the follow-up to the review of the UN Peacebuilding Commission and underlined the need for greater coordination between the Council and the Assembly in addressing post-conflict situations.
