General Assembly President arrives in China at start of Asian tour

General Assembly President Ali Treki
The President of the General Assembly arrived today in the Chinese capital, Beijing, kicking off a visit to Asia that will also take him to India and Pakistan.

While in China, at the invitation of the country’s Government, Ali Treki will meet with top officials, including Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and State Councillor Dai Bingguo.

Later this week, he will hold talks with Vice President Xi Jinping and attend a banquet hosted by President Hu Jintao.

Before departing for New Delhi on 2 May, Dr. Treki will attend the opening ceremony of the Shanghai World Expo.

The Indian leg of his trip will end on 5 May, and he will then wrap up his Asian visit with a three-day stop in Pakistan.

Before leaving for China, Dr. Treki held a series of meetings in New York with, among others, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the Permanent Representatives of Syria, India, Tunisia and Spain.

In a meeting last week with the President of the Security Council for April, Yukio Takasu of Japan, the two men discussed important issues on the agendas of the two UN principal organs.

Mr. Takasu briefed Dr. Treki on the open debates held by the Council this month, including on the situation in the Middle East and post-conflict peacebuilding, as well as the working methods of the Security Council, and women and peace and security.

They also exchanged views on recent developments in Africa, particularly neighbouring Chad and Sudan, and the scheduled renewal of mandates of United Nations peacekeeping missions this month.

The Assembly President holds regular meetings with the heads of the other principal organs of the UN, as provided for in the relevant resolutions of the General Assembly, to ensure enhanced cooperation and coordination in their work programmes.
