UN official joins condemnation of deadly subway bombings in Moscow

The United Nations refugee chief has added his voice to the chorus of international condemnation at this week’s suicide bombings in the Moscow subway system, describing the twin attacks as “an appalling and heartless crime.”

António Guterres, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, issued a statement yesterday in which he said he had learned with great sadness of the bomb attacks on Monday morning that killed at least 39 people and injured dozens of others.

“I extend my sincere condolences to the families of all those who’ve been affected,” Mr. Guterres said, adding he offered his sympathies to the Russian Government and people.

Media reports say the attacks occurred within 40 minutes of each during the morning rush hour at the Lubyanka and Park Kultury metro stations, with witnesses stating that the attacks were carried out by female suicide bombers.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Security Council members have also condemned the bombings and stressed that no acts of terrorism can ever be justified, regardless of their motivation.
