The President of the General Assembly arrived in Cairo today to meet with senior officials of the Egyptian Government and representatives of the League of Arab States.

During his four-day visit, Ali Treki is expected to discuss matters relating to the Middle East, Sudan, Somalia and other topical African issues, his spokesperson Jean Victor Nkolo told the UN News Centre.

He is also slated to hold talks with the Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif, Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit, and the Minister for International Cooperation, as well as address the Council of the League of Arab States at the Permanent Representative level on Sunday.

Before leaving New York, Mr. Treki met with Senior Vice-President for External Affairs at the World Bank Marwan al-Muasher to discuss issues on the agenda of the General Assembly.

The topics they discussed included post-conflict peacebuilding issues and preparations for September’s formal review of progress on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the set of internationally agreed targets to eradicate poverty and other social ills by 2015.
