Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is appealing to donor nations and institutions to be generous when they meet next week in Brussels to raise much-needed funds for the UN Mission in Chad and the Central African Republic (CAR).

The 2 October event is being organized by the Mission – known as MINURCAT – as well as the Government of Chad and the European Commission.

The organizers are hoping to raise some $17 million for the Mission’s technical and logistical support for a specialized Chadian police unit – the Détachement Intégré de Sécurité – that is tasked with protecting refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Chad’s north-eastern border region with Sudan.

The area is host to over 290,000 Sudanese refugees from the Darfur conflict, as well as 180,000 Chadians who are displaced within their own country due to insecurity.

The Mission says it also needs another $4 million for new projects to improve Chad’s justice and prison sectors.

The Security Council approved the establishment of MINURCAT in September 2007 to help protect civilians and facilitate humanitarian aid to thousands of people uprooted due to insecurity in Chad and CAR, as well as neighbouring Sudan.
