Ban voices hope that new UN internal justice system will increase accountability

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon address Judges of the UN dispute and appeals tribunals
Presiding over the swearing-in of the 15 judges of the United Nations dispute and appeals tribunals today in New York, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed hope that the new system will boost accountability.

The two tribunals are set to become operational by 1 July and will mark the first time the world body will have a two-tier judicial system, Mr. Ban’s spokesperson, Michele Montas, told reporters in New York.

The General Assembly approved the new mechanisms last December after years of negotiations and preparations, and the tribunals are expected to increase professionalism, independence and expediency.

“The Secretary-General hopes the new system will enable us to deal with internal disputes more quickly, fairly and transparently,” Ms. Montas said.
