Special Rapporteur Vernor Muñoz
An independent United Nations expert kicks off a nine-day trip to Paraguay today to assess the extent to which the South-American nation implements the right to education for all the country's children.

Special Rapporteur Vernor Muñoz examine issues related to access to education on his visits to primary schools, secondary schools and public universities, as well as the quality of education particularly for girls and boys from indigenous communities.

During the official trip, which ends on 22 April, Mr. Muñoz will visit the cities of Asuncion and Ciudad del Este, and meet with Government officials, civil society representatives and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

His study will also involve discussions with education professionals, academics, students and trade unions, as well as indigenous communities in the Chaco region, specifically the Departmento de Presidente Hayes and Departamento Central.

The Special Rapporteur, who has served the UN in an independent unpaid capacity since 2004, will present his findings and key recommendations in a report to the Geneva-based Human Rights Council in 2010.
