The top United Nations envoy in Iraq strongly condemned today’s suicide bombing that killed dozens of people in Baghdad’s Abu Ghraib suburb.

This latest attack targeted Sunni and Shiite tribal leaders holding reconciliation talks aimed at easing tensions between the various sectarian communities in the region, Staffan de Mistura, the Secretary-General’s Special Representative, said in a press release.

As well as the many innocent civilians, the explosion injured tribal leaders, journalists and military officials.

Mr. de Mistura characterized the bombing as a “horrible crime that is designed to sabotage reconciliatory efforts by the Iraqi people,” extending the UN’s condolences to the families of those affected and sending his wishes for the full and speedy recovery of the wounded.
