Nepal: UN agency condemns attack on refugees

Bhutanese refugees in Khudunabari camp
The United Nations refugee agency and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) today condemned last night’s attack on a bus transporting Bhutanese refugees near the Khudunabari camp in eastern Nepal.

Two refugees and the driver of the bus were injured in the attack which was carried out by nine masked men with heavy stones and sticks. The bus, which belonged to the IOM, was ferrying 15 refugees back to the camp.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is calling for the apprehension of those responsible so that they are brought to justice.

Some 108,000 refugees from Bhutan have been living in seven camps in eastern Nepal since the early 1990s.
