UN System Staff College allows better delivery of results, says Ban Ki-moon

The United Nations System Staff College contributes to efforts by the Organization to unify its activities to more efficiently help the world’s people, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in New York today.

Speaking to a meeting of the Turin-based body’s donors, Mr. Ban noted the College’s part in helping achieve the goal of “One United Nations” so “we can deliver better results to the peoples of the world, where it counts.”

He pointed out that over 4,000 UN staff took part in almost 100 training activities around the world last year.

“These valuable programmes deserve attention and support,” the Secretary-General observed, voicing hope that the meeting’s participants can find new avenues of collaboration.

In January 2002, the College began its operations as a distinct institution within the UN system, and currently focuses on four main areas: UN system learning and training; management and leadership; peace and security; and development cooperation.

“We live in an age where change is the only constant,” Mr. Ban said. “It is the lifelong learners who are able to participate and contribute in forging a better future for all.”

Stressing that the UN is a “knowledge-based Organization,” he emphasized that learning and training help the world body tackle challenges, ranging from food security to climate change to achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) – the eight anti-poverty targets with a 2015 deadline.
