UN works to improve daily lives of people, Ban Ki-moon tells Arab broadcasters
“Sometimes, we only hear the political side of the story,” Mr. Ban said in a video message to the Arab Broadcast Forum in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, referring to historic resolutions passed by the world body – including those on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, Iraq, Darfur and others.
“But the other side of the UN story is just as important to the daily lives of people throughout the region – and sometimes even more so,” he noted, stressing the UN’s work, which spans helping refugees and displaced persons, operating schools and hospitals, among other vital activities.
But the Secretary-General voiced his shock and sadness that there have been times, including last December’s terror attack in Algiers claiming the lives of 17 staff members, when the UN’s work has been misunderstood.
“The UN family will continue to help build better lives for the men, women and children we exist to serve,” he said.
Mr. Ban also urged Arab broadcasters to use their influence, which he noted is greater than ever before, and their voice as effectively as possible.
