Iraqi Government and UN officials discuss human rights protections

The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) announced today that it has helped convene a meeting with the Iraqi Ministry of Human Rights on protecting people in the violence-wracked country against a range of rights abuses.

The meeting, which continues through 15 November, is designed to provide senior government officials with the opportunity to present the new structure and core functions of the Ministry as well as discuss how best to improve cooperation, information-sharing and coordination within State institutions, UNAMI said.

According to the Mission, representatives of the Ministries of Justice, Defence, Interior, Education, Social Affairs and National Dialogue and Reconciliation have also been invited.

In addition, members of the Human Rights Committee of the Iraqi Council of Representatives and representatives of the High Judicial Council and the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister’s office were asked to attend.
