Annan arrives in Uruguay to attend Ibero-American Summit

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan arrived in Montevideo, Uruguay, today to attend the Ibero-American Summit, which he will address on its opening day tomorrow.

He is expected to meet with Uruguayan President Tabaré Vázquez and other leaders on the margins of the meeting.

The annual summit, which Mr. Annan has addressed in previous years, is a forum for “political harmonization” among 21 Ibero-American countries – including Portugal, Spain and all the Hispano-Luso-American nations – with a total population of some 490 million.

Last year, in Salamanca, Spain, he made a fervent appeal for true democracy to help bridge the “terrible inequalities [that] continue to scar our world.”
