For his pioneering research in numerical weather prediction, a Swedish professor, Lennart Bengtsson, has been awarded the prestigious “IMO” Prize in meteorological science, the United Nations World Meteorological Association (WMO) has announced.

“Professor Bengtsson has contributed to the development of meteorological science and international cooperation for more than 40 years,” said the WMO, which also honoured several other scientists for their contributions to the various weather sciences at its Executive Council last week.

“His knowledge and curiosity were the basis for his leadership at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg, 1991-2000, while his tremendous enthusiasm has been a source of inspiration for his colleagues and collaborators worldwide,” the agency added.

The IMO Prize gets its name and origins from the WMO’s predecessor, the International Meteorological Organization, which was founded in 1873.
