Annan says UN ready to help Nigeria following pipeline explosion

After learning “with great concern” of the loss of life that took place when an oil pipeline exploded in Nigeria today, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan pledged the world body’s assistance if needed.

“The United Nations stands ready to offer any support requested by the Government in the aftermath of this tragic incident,” Mr. Annan said through a statement released by his spokesman in New York.

Mr. Annan also sent condolences to the families of the victims of the blast, which occurred in the village of Ilado, near Nigeria’s commercial centre, Lagos.
