UN, New York Tolerance Center to host films on Holocaust, genocide prevention
The United Nations Department of Public Information (DPI) and the New York Tolerance Center today announced plans to jointly launch a film series next week aimed at fostering an international discussion on the Holocaust and the dangers of hatred, bigotry, racism and prejudice.
The United Nations Department of Public Information (DPI) and the New York Tolerance Center today announced plans to jointly launch a film series next week aimed at fostering an international discussion on the Holocaust and the dangers of hatred, bigotry, racism and prejudice.
The first screening, scheduled for 25 April at the Tolerance Center located in Manhattan, will feature the film “Sophie Scholl: The Final Days.” The film is about the last six days in the life of Sophie Scholl who is caught by the Gestapo as a member of the German Nazi-resistance group, the White Rose, and is executed for “high treason” by the Nazis.
Raymond Sommereyns, Director of DPI’s Outreach Division and Mark Weitzman, Director of the New York Tolerance Center, will make opening remarks. Hans-Juergen Heimsoeth, Consul General of Germany, which is cosponsoring the screening, will also speak.
The UN’s outreach programme on the Holocaust was called for by a General Assembly resolution and aims to mobilize civil society for Holocaust remembrance and education in order to help to prevent future acts of genocide.
