Head of UN aviation agency appointed to second three-year term
Taïeb Chérif, an Algerian with over 30 years of commercial airline experience, has been reappointed to a second three-year term as Secretary General of the United Nations International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), effective 1 August 2006.
Taïeb Chérif, an Algerian with over 30 years of commercial airline experience, has been reappointed to a second three-year term as Secretary General of the United Nations International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), effective 1 August 2006.
Mr. Chérif, first appointed to the position on 1 August 2003, focused during his first term on measures to further improve ICAO’s efficiency and effectiveness in responding to the evolving needs of its 189 Contracting States and of the world aviation community.
Measures include the more widespread use of technology for cost-effective delivery of information and documentation services, significant changes to the organizational structure and realignment of human resources strategies and greater functional integration between Headquarters and the Organization’s seven Regional Offices.
Mr. Chérif was Representative of Algeria on the ICAO Council from 1998 to 2003. His career includes various high-level positions in the civil aviation administration as well as Secretary of State for Higher Education in Algeria.
Among measures adopted by ICAO in the past year were tougher controls on aircraft smog emissions and a new ‘unified strategy’ to boost air safety worldwide.
