UN’s top rights official to visit Russian Federation

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights will head later this month to Chechnya, as well as Moscow and Saint Petersburg in the Russian Federation, her spokesman announced today.

José Luis Díaz told reporters in Geneva that Louise Arbour will make stops in Grozny and Beslan in North Ossetia during her 19 to 25 February visit.

While in Moscow, the High Commissioner plans to meet with President Vladimir Putin.

Last February, during her visit to Russia, Ms. Arbour was invited by Mr. Putin to visit the Northern Caucasus region, including Chechnya.
