Haiti: two UN peacekeepers killed at check point
The UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) said that the trio was manning a check point when they came under fire.
One of the peacekeepers was reportedly killed on the spot.
The other two were taken to hospital, where one of them died of his wounds shortly afterwards. The third peacekeeper’s condition is said to be serious.
Haiti has turned into one of the most hazardous locales for UN personnel with at least six staff members meeting violent deaths last year.
Armed gangs have been a constant concern of MINUSTAH since it was set up by the Security Council to help to re-establish peace in the impoverished Caribbean country after an insurgency forced elected President Jean-Bertrand Aristide to go into exile in February 2004.
