United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today mourned the death and paid tribute to the legacy of Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai, one of the seven sheikdoms that make up the United Arab Emirates for which Sheikh Maktoum also served as Prime Minister and Vice-President.

“Sheikh Maktoum ruled Dubai during a crucial era of development, modernization and growth,” Mr. Annan said through a spokesman. “He will be remembered for his many years of visionary leadership, which helped build stability and prosperity in the UAE in the midst of dramatic developments in the Gulf region as a whole.”

The Secretary-General also conveyed his support to Sheikh Maktoum’s successor, the Crown Prince of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, wishing him “every courage and fortitude in the years ahead.”
