Security Council mourns death of Saudi King Fahd
Mourning the death of Saudi Arabian King Fahd Bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud, the United Nations Security Council today paid tribute to what Secretary-General Kofi Annan yesterday called the long-time Saudi leader’s “enduring contributions” to international and regional diplomacy.
Reading out a statement during a formal meeting, Ambassador Kenzo Oshima, of Japan, which holds the Presidency of the 15-nation body for the month of August, expressed the Council’s heartfelt condolences to the people and Government of Saudi Arabia, following King Fahd’s death over the weekend.
“[King Fahd] devoted himself wholeheartedly devoted himself both to the service of his country and to the promotion of peace and understanding in his region and internationally,” Ambassador Oshima said.
