UN sends electoral review mission to Côte d'Ivoire

A special United Nations mission was expected to arrive in Côte d'Ivoire's capital today to review preparations and timelines for the October presidential elections in the West African country over the next fortnight, a UN spokesman said Friday.

The mission, based in Abidjan, will look at plans for voter registration for the 30 October poll and the role of the UN system, taking into account the Pretoria Agreement, a peace accord recently signed by Ivorian leaders after negotiations by South African President Thabo Mbeki on behalf of the African Union (AU).

The review mission is being led by the Electoral Assistance Division of the UN Department of Political Affairs (DPA) and includes staff from the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) and two consultants.
