A senior United Nations development official has been named the new deputy for the UN agency coordinating the world body’s efforts against HIV/AIDS.

Dr. Peter Piot, Executive Director of the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), announced the appointment of Deborah Landey, the UN Resident Coordinator in the Philippines since 2003, as his new second-in-command.

As deputy, the Canadian will help lead the senior UNAIDS management while her experience at country level in strengthening UN coordination will be of prime importance to the agency, Dr. Piot said.

Ms. Landey has also served as UN Resident Coordinator in Botswana and worked for the UN Development Programme’s (UNDP) Bureau of Management.
