ECOSOC fills vacancies on subsidiary bodies, including human rights panel
The United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) today filled vacancies on a number of its subsidiary bodies, including the Geneva-based Commission on Human Rights.
The United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) today filled vacancies on a number of its subsidiary bodies, including the Geneva-based Commission on Human Rights.
Elected by acclamation to the top UN rights panel for three-year terms, beginning on 1 January, were Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bangladesh, Botswana, Brazil, Cameroon, China, Germany, Japan, Morocco, the United States, Venezuela and Zimbabwe. Azerbaijan was elected after one round of secret balloting.
ECOSOC completed the makeup of its Commissions dealing with statistics, population and development, the status of women, crime prevention and criminal justice, sustainable development and narcotic drugs.
The Council also elected Member States to the executive bodies of the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the UN Development Programme (UNDP)/UN Population Fund (UNFPA), the World Food Programme (WFP), and the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).
