UN mission welcomes Haiti's launch of voter registration

The United Nations peacekeeping mission has welcomed the start of voter registration in Haiti in preparation for elections later this year.

The beginning of registration yesterday was "a moment of joy for Haiti and the international community," said the head of the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) and Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General (SRSG), Juan Gabriel Valdés.

"The country is making progress along the path of peace, reconciliation, dialogue and the restructuring of its institutions," he added.

The Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) launched the registration effort in Gonaïves, in the Artibonite department.
