United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today congratulated Burundi for successfully conducting a referendum on the post-transitional constitution, and called on the parties to ensure that national elections are held quickly.

"In welcoming this important event in the national history of Burundi, the Secretary-General also calls on all Burundian parties to build on this positive momentum and ensure the early conduct of the national elections that would conclude the transitional process in Burundi," said a statement issued by Mr. Annan's spokesman in New York.

The UN Operation in Burundi (ONUB) reported that voters turned out in an orderly and calm manner as early as 6 a.m. to cast their ballots in yesterday's national referendum.

"No major incidents were reported which could affect the vote, apart from a few technical and logistical problems registered in some polling stations," it said.

ONUB chief Carolyn McAskie, Mr. Annan's Special Representative for Burundi, added, "We are happy with the Burundian people for what they have accomplished today. They can be proud of this electoral day."
