The senior United Nations envoy for Iraq today held talks with the country's Foreign Minister about the upcoming elections and the current political situation, stressing that Iraq's neighbours were supporting its attempts to make the transition to democracy and security.

Ashraf Qazi, the Secretary-General's Special Representative for Iraq, met Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari in Amman, the Jordanian capital, a day after the city played host to a conference of the foreign ministers of Iraq's neighbours.

Mr. Qazi reiterated to Mr. Zebari during their meeting that the conference indicated how clearly Iraq's neighbours want to help the nation build a democratic, secure and prosperous society. They also discussed the upcoming elections scheduled for 30 January.
