Secretary-General Kofi Annan today announced the appointment of a Pakistani human rights expert and veteran United Nations manager as Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Secretary-General Kofi Annan today announced the appointment of a Pakistani human rights expert and veteran United Nations manager as Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Mehr Khan Williams, who has worked for the UN since 1976, holding senior management positions in New York, Florence and Bangkok with the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), will become an Assistant-Secretary-General.

Until this July, she was UNICEF's regional director in East Asia and the Pacific, providing leadership and oversight for the agency's work in 22 countries, and is currently Special Advisor to UNICEF chief Carol Bellamy. She has also served as Acting Director of the UN Information Centre in Sydney.
