Disturbed by violence in Pakistan, Annan calls for steps to stem sectarian strife
Condemning recent violence in Karachi, Pakistan, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today called for measures to shield civilians and foster understanding among different communities.
Over the last two days, a religious leader was murdered and a mosque was bombed in the coastal city. In addition, disturbances marred the funeral procession for those killed in the blast.
"The Secretary-General condemns in the strongest terms terrorist acts that target innocent civilians and places of worship as well as attempts to sow sectarian discord and strife," his spokesman said in a statement released in New York.
"He hopes that the necessary steps will be taken to protect innocent lives and calls for inter-communal partnerships to foil the policy of hate and violence," the statement said.
