Making globalization fair, creating jobs and promoting development through providing decent work are the foundations for global stability, the Director-General of the United Nations International Labour Organization (ILO) said today as the agency opened its annual conference in Geneva.

Making globalization fair, creating jobs and promoting development through providing decent work are the foundations for global stability, the Director-General of the United Nations International Labour Organization (ILO) said today as the agency opened its annual conference in Geneva.

Juan Somavia said the ILO can build a foundation for the future by promoting "employment as the main route out of poverty."

The annual ILO conference oversees compliance with international labour standards and establishes the agency's budget. The gathering also fosters debate on global social and labour questions.

Delegates are slated to discuss a new role for the ILO in shaping a fair and equitable globalization. They will also examine a programme of action for migrant workers. The situation of workers in the Occupied Territories, Myanmar and other countries will come under scrutiny, as will employment conditions in the world's fishing sector.
