UN peacekeeping chief to start review visit in DR of Congo this week

Jean-Marie Guéhenno
The United Nations peacekeeping chief is scheduled to arrive Wednesday in the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) at the start of a weeklong review of UN operations that will include visits to Rwanda, Uganda and South Africa.

In the DRC capital, Kinshasa, Under-Secretary-General Jean-Marie Guéhenno is due to hold talks with Congolese authorities and members of the International Committee to Support the Transition (CIAT).

At the headquarters of the UN Organization Mission in the DRC (MONUC) in Kinshasa, he is also to inaugurate a stele erected to honour all the peacekeepers who have lost their lives since the Mission was launched in 1999.

He will then go to the eastern region to inquire into the deployment of UN forces, known as the Ituri and Kivu Brigades, in Bunia, Bukavu and Uvira.
