United Nations Special Adviser Lakhdar Brahimi continued his discussions in Iraq today on the formation of a caretaker government, meeting with a number of Iraqi Governing Council members to discuss the political transition to take place at the end of June and listen to their views.

Among the Council members he met were Sheikh Ghazi, a tribal leader from Mosul, Dr. Mahmouh Othman, Adel Abdel Mahdi of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq, and Adnan Pachachi.

Also attending Mr. Brahimi's meeting with Dr. Othman was the newly appointed Iraqi Minister for Human Rights, Bakhtyar Amin. They discussed the situation surrounding the treatment by coalition forces of Iraqi detainees, which Mr. Brahimi again condemned. The Minister briefed him on the mechanisms that were being put in place to ensure that those incidents did not occur again.

Mr. Brahimi also met with the National Security Adviser of the Council of Ministers, Mouwafak al-Rubei.

In New York, Mr. Annan was asked about the recent apologies from US officials concerning the photographs of prisoner abuses in Iraq. "I'm relieved that US leaders have taken it quite seriously, including the President saying he was sorry for what happened," he replied. "And I hope the people in the region pay attention to that reaction."
