Anna Cataldi, UN Messenger of Peace, visits Afghanistan

United Nations Messenger of Peace Anna Cataldi, who is also a spokesperson for the UN Mine Action Service, is on 10-day trip around Afghanistan in both of her roles - visiting demining sites and reviewing educational projects.

Ms. Cataldi, who arrived in Kabul yesterday, will visit UN Mine Action Centre for Afghanistan (UNMACA) and non-governmental demining sites in and around the Afghan capital and in four other provinces.

She is scheduled to leave Afghanistan on 12 May.

In "Letters from Sarajevo," the Italian author chronicled the impact of war on Bosnia's children. To mark the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1998, Ms. Cataldi initiated a project to create and distribute a version of the Declaration for children.

The other UN Messengers of Peace include former champion boxer Muhammad Ali of the United States, film and television actor-director Michael Douglas of the United States, former international tennis star Vijay Amritraj of India and conservationist and anthropologist Jane Goodall of the United Kingdom.

The others are singer-composer Enrico Macias of France, classical and jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis of the United States, former Italian-born opera star Luciano Pavarotti and writer and human rights advocate Elie Wiesel of the United States.
