Two more persons added to Security Council list on Taliban and Al-Qaida sanctions

Two more individuals have been added to the consolidated list of those subject to sanctions imposed by the United Nations Security Council against the Taliban and Usama bin Laden and his associates in the Al-Qaida organization.

Kuwait-born Sulaiman Abo Ghaith, 38, and 41-year old Jamel Lounici, born in Algiers, were added to the Al-Qaida section of the list complied and updated by the Council’s committee overseeing the sanctions, which require countries to freeze financial resources – including funds derived or generated by any undertaking owned or controlled by the Taliban – and to ensure that they are not used by the group.

States are also obliged to freeze funds and other financial assets of Usama bin Laden and his associates in the Al-Qaida organization, and to prevent their entry or transit through the State’s territory. In addition, nations must prevent the supply, sale and transfer of all arms and materiel – along with any form of military training – to the named individuals and entities.

The list is updated regularly on the basis of relevant information provided by Member States and regional organizations. There are currently 294 individuals and 100 entities on the list.
