UN peacekeepers in Liberia open medical camp to treat civilians

The United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) has opened its first medical camp to provide free health services to the local population.

During its three days of operation, the site, run by a contingent of Pakistani troops serving with UNMIL, treated over 670 patients.

Located in Kley District, the camp was launched in coordination with government officials. Drugs and equipment were provided by the UN World Health Organization (WHO).

Dr. Mohammad Ahsan Ul Haq, who ran the site with the help of a Liberian nurse, voiced satisfaction at the results. “It is rewarding work because we help people,” he said.

At the same time, he noted that many of the diseases he treated – including malnourishment and maternal anemia – could be prevented. “The population lacks education in hygiene, sanitation and family planning,” Dr. Ul Haq observed.

The peacekeepers, who plan to open other medical camps in various areas, are currently renovating a hospital in Tubmanburg.
