Annan condemns deadly bomb attacks in southern Afghanistan

Reacting to the latest spate of deadly violence in Afghanistan, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan condemned today's bomb attacks, which killed 14 people, mostly children, in the southern city of Kandahar.

Some 70 others were reportedly injured in the two explosions, which followed a separate incident in Kandahar yesterday, when a hand grenade was thrown into the local compound of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). No one was hurt in that attack.

In a statement issued by his spokesman, Mr. Annan said he strongly condemned "these heinous acts of violence" and sent his condolences to the families of the victims and the Afghan Government.
