The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) is backing the urgent call from leaders of the Education For All (EFA) movement to dramatically accelerate measures to help 65 million girls currently denied an education.

UNICEF is happy with agreements reached at an EFA meeting this week in New Delhi, India, a UN spokesman said today.

The agency was especially pleased with recommendations to support UNICEF's strategy to get more girls into school and to strengthen the UN Girls' Education Initiative, the spokesman added. An estimated 65 million girls around the worldwide are currently denied the right to have an education.

On 11 December, UNICEF will launch what it describes as its flagship publication, "The State of the World's Children," with a special focus on girls' education.
