Security Council mission to Afghanistan holds lengthy talks in capital

The Security Council delegation touring Afghanistan spent almost nine hours holding meetings with officials in the capital Kabul today, on the third day of its mission to the country.

On the eve of its visit tomorrow to the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif, the delegation heard briefings and discussed ways to improve security in Afghanistan and expand the central government’s authority across the country.

A UN spokesperson travelling with the 15-member delegation, led by German Ambassador Gunter Pleuger, said they also assessed continuing economic and financial reforms, and discussed how to tackle the drugs economy and Afghanistan’s relations with Iran and Pakistan.

According to the spokesperson, the group met with Afghan Government ministers, the Pakistani and Iranian Ambassadors, and the United States’ most senior military official in Afghanistan. The delegation also received briefings about the training of the Afghan police and army.
