UN office in Central African Republic gets 1-year extension

The Security Council has accepted a one-year extension of the United Nations Peace-building Support Office in the Central African Republic (BONUCA), which Secretary-General Kofi Annan had recommended to enable the Office to help shepherd the country through elections next year.

The Security Council has accepted a one-year extension of the United Nations Peace-building Support Office in the Central African Republic (BONUCA), which Secretary-General Kofi Annan had recommended to enable the Office to help shepherd the country through elections next year.

The Council's acceptance of the extension, until 31 December 2004, was conveyed in a letter to the Secretary-General from the President of the 15-nation body, Ambassador Emyr Jones Parry of the United Kingdom, released today.

Earlier this month, the Secretary-General had written the Council President to propose an extension of the mandate to enable BONUCA to continue to support the Bangui Government's efforts to restore constitutional legality through national dialogue and to strengthen national capacities for the promotion of the rule of law during the transitional period leading up to the general elections, which are expected to take place before the end of 2004.
