United Nations agencies and non-governmental organization (NGO) partners are bringing assistance to some 330,000 people left homeless by floods in northwestern Sudan.

Floodwaters from the River Gash have swept through the town of Kassala, some 280 kilometres northwest of the capital, Khartoum, and left two thirds of its 500,000 inhabitants homeless. As of Tuesday, 13 deaths and 56 injuries have been confirmed.

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) said humanitarian organizations had not yet arrived in the region and aid had been unable to get through because the roads were impassable. It added that an inter-agency mission that had gone there reported that food was a priority.
