ECOSOC adopts resolution on the implementation of outcomes of UN conferences

The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) has adopted a resolution concerning its role in implementing the outcomes of major United Nations conferences and summits, deciding to take the necessary steps to put into action the provisions relevant to its work and its subsidiary machinery.

By the terms of the text adopted yesterday during its annual meeting in Geneva, ECOSOC welcomed the UN General Assembly resolution on the same topic, as well as that body's request for the establishment of a multi-year work programme for ECOSOC's coordination segment, based on a focused and balanced list of cross-sectoral thematic issues common to the outcomes of major UN conferences and summits.

ECOSOC Vice-President Murari Raj Sharma said in many ways the work of the Assembly had facilitated the Council's task and formal consultations on cross-sectoral themes for future work would be launched soon.

The Council also expressed its determination to finalize the list of cross-sectoral thematic issues and the multi-year work programme, with the aim of reaching a decision before its 2004 session.
