UN envoy set to visit Myanmar next month in bid to restart national reconciliation

An envoy of United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan is preparing to head to Myanmar next month in a bid to restart the national reconciliation process.

Razali Ismail is scheduled to visit the capital, Yangon, from 6 to 10 June for this tenth mission as Special Envoy.

"The Secretary-General hopes that the Special Envoy's visit will reinvigorate the process of national reconciliation in Myanmar, which appears to have stalled over the past several months," said a statement issued by a spokesman for Mr. Annan.

"He reiterates his call on both the Government and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, General Secretary of the National League for Democracy (NLD), to redouble their efforts to start substantive political dialogue by taking advantage of Mr. Razali's forthcoming visit."
