UN mission participates in first meeting of panel to help transition in DR of Congo

An international panel convened to support the political transition in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has held its first meeting with the participation of the United Nations mission in that country.

The International Committee for Support to the Transition in DRC held its first meeting yesterday in Kinshasa at the headquarters of the UN Organization Mission in the DRC (MONUC) to discuss its working methods and the support it can provide to the follow-up committee for the Global and Inclusive Agreement.

The Agreement, signed last December and endorsed on 1 April in South Africa, paves the way for the creation of a comprehensive power-sharing administration and new transitional constitution in the DRC.

In addition to MONUC, Committee members include the five permanent members of the Security Council, Angola, Belgium, Canada, Mozambique, South Africa and the European Commission.
