Pakistan: Annan urges justice for perpetrators of mosque attack

24 February 2003

Appalled by Saturday's attack on a Shiite mosque in Pakistan, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today urged government authorities in that country to make every effort to bring those responsible to justice.

The attack on the mosque in Karachi, which left several people dead and many injured, was apparently aimed at dividing religious communities in Pakistan, according to a statement issued in New York by a spokesman for Mr. Annan.

The Secretary-General also conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families and to the Government of Pakistan.
